Saint-Etienne, January 30th 2006
As a major event supported both by the Town of Saint-Etienne and
the Saint-Etienne Métropole organisation, the International Design Biennial has enjoyed increasing
success since it was founded by the Fine Arts School in 1998, thus confirming the appeal of design in all its forms.
As an international gathering this event represents a unique opportunity for meetings and discoveries, dedicated to the
professionals who come to spot new talents and better acquaint themselves with those emerging countries exhibiting their
creations, in some cases for the first time in France.
This worldwide meeting place also represents a large exhibition space open to the general public to come and discover the
sheer diversity of this sector, learning more about it by following the specially organised guided tours.
For the first time, the 2006 International Design Biennial will be organised by the Saint-Etienne Cité du Design team. Hence,
the Cité :
- a superior creative space, largely embodied by the Fine Arts School which was behind this great adventure,
- a tool for economic dynamism, a model space dedicated to prospection and innovation, designed to link economy and
culture.
The Cité focuses most particularly on a broad vision of design, which invents and affirms new life systems through the design
of objects, images and services.
This is why we have called on the designer Matali Crasset to select and showcase works from the four corners of the world. The
first exhibition called "Cohabitations, vivre ensemble", which turns the spotlight on contemporary design, will be mounted
actually within the future Cité du Design, on a site dominated by the industrial architecture of the region, restored by the
architects Finn Geipel and Giulia Andi.
The second exhibition named "Demain c¡¯est aujourd¡¯hui" is about the prospective design research developed by companies. It
will be held just a few metres away, in the Cité Berthiez, another major industrial wasteland and will open out the Biennial on
the scale of an industrial quarter, a symbol of the Town, its history and its future.
Moreover, several commissioners and institutions will display the innovation processes illustrating the "creation-enterprise"
relationship and the strategic role of design, namely in the development of new technologies.
Seminars, training sessions and workshops will be organised, transforming the Biennial into an opportunity for work and
reflection for designers, industrialists, engineers, schools, teachers, etc.
Exhibitions held in shops and commercial premises will allow the Biennial to extend into the town centre, mainly on the
North-South axis served by tram. This new Design Biennial is a real opportunity for the Cité du Design to make its mark as a
driver to generate and revitalise local life.
The Biennial is aimed at the general public, design professionals and economic operators, from the region and beyond. This is
why we have chosen this year to allocate particular times to each sector. Over the thirteen days of the event, the first three will
be open exclusively to professionals, journalists, students and economic operators before opening to the general public. Five
days will be devoted to school groups and their teachers.
The most colourful celebrations, fashion shows and "off" events will feed the international dynamic created around the
Saint-Etienne¡¯s Cité du Design by the Biennial. This will be the moment for the public and exhibitors to discover and celebrate
the Cité du Design of Saint-Etienne together a year before its official inauguration.
In anticipation of your reply and looking forward to welcoming you, my team and I send you our best wishes for a bold and
productive year 2006.
Elsa Francès
Managing Director, Cité du Design
